RoboRater

Independently developed by Sustainability House, RoboRater is an innovative software tool which automates building thermal simulation to test the effect of design changes. If you are a residential builder or home owner, you’ll find RoboRater very useful in pinpointing the most cost-effective and/ or energy efficient solutions for new and existing buildings.

Key features:

  • Rapid building assessment at more than 13,000 simulations per minute
  • Unparalleled research capabilities to identify the best design solutions
  • Reduced assessment costs
  • Automated process that eliminates assessment errors

How does RoboRater work?

RoboRater is compatible with files from NatHERS approved software (AccuRate, FirstRate5 and BERS Pro). It rapidly assesses how a dwelling will perform with a range of construction and specification types. Results for all possible combinations are produced in spreadsheet format which include annual energy loads and the star rating achieved with each combination of variables. If required, construction costs are also assigned to each of the simulation results so that cost-effective design solutions can be easily found. We also offer a consulting service to help you select a design option that suits your requirements. For compliance of new houses and extensions we will generate a compliance certificate once you have selected a design option from the RoboRater results.

What variables can RoboRater change?

RoboRater is capable of changing most building design features including:

  • Construction types (e.g. wall construction such as brick veneer and reverse brick veneer)
  • Glazing type and area
  • Shading (e.g. external awnings to specific windows)
  • Insulation levels
  • External cladding colours
  • Ceiling fans
  • Ventilation rates
  • Orientation
  • Location

Who can use RoboRater?

RoboRater assessments can be used to improve energy performance and save money when building new houses and renovating or retrofitting existing houses. It is ideally suited to builders, home owners, architects, energy assessors, property developers and investors, building product manufacturers, councils and government agencies concerned with energy use by the residential sector.

What are the benefits of using RoboRater beyond a standard NatHERS assessment?

Without the assistance of RoboRater it would take an energy efficiency assessor about one minute to change a specification, such as ceiling insulation level, and then record the result. Using this approach it is near impossible to find the best design solution. RoboRater can complete thousands of simulations per minute which allows the most cost-effective and energy efficient design solution to be found.

What benefits does RoboRater offer beyond common-sense design solutions?

The energy efficiency of a building is unique for each design and influenced by a whole range of factors including design features, location and orientation. Buildings respond differently to variations in design features and specifications. For example, the benefit of improving glazing type will vary depending on the insulation in the building.   It’s not possible, even for an experienced energy assessor with a thorough understanding of thermal design principles, to accurately predict the most energy efficient and cost-effective building solution. By rapidly analysing all possible combinations of design variables, RoboRater ensures the best solution is  found for a fraction of the cost of a manual assessment by an energy efficiency assessor.

How much does a RoboRater assessment cost?

The cost for a RoboRater assessment varies depending on the size and complexity of a building design and the number of variations required. Contact us for a free quote.

What information do you require for a RoboRater assessment?

At the minimum we require building plans and construction details. If your building has already been modelled in NatHERS approved software, then we also can use the file, and this will reduce the cost of your RoboRater assessment. We will work with you to identify your preferred design options, such as different levels of insulation, construction materials, cladding colours, glazing type and area and shading.

How long does a RoboRater assessment take?

Once we have all the required information,  you will have your RoboRater assessment within 10 business days. A priority service is available if you require a faster service
