6 STAR ENERGY RATINGS

Download the 6 Star Fact Sheet (PDF 2.8MB) for more information

With the 2010 Building Code of Australia (BCA 2010) the minimum requirements for house energy ratings has been increased to 6 stars. This will be implemented for building approvals from:

  • May 1st, 2010 in Queensland and The ACT
  • September 1st, 2010 in South Australia
  • Anticipating early 2011 in NSW, VIC, TAS, WA and NT

6 Star Suggestions

There is a big difference between 5 and 6 stars. For example, in Adelaide a six star house would use approximately 75% of the energy used by a five star house.

For more hints and information download the 6 Star Fact Sheet (PDF 2.8MB).

  • Consider the orientation of the block
  • Locate non-habitable rooms to the west and living rooms to the north
  • Avoid excessive glazing or choose improved glazing
  • Think about appropriate shading
